There is no obvious entrance, no gate, no gap where a person might once have passed through. This ringfort, or rath, one of the most common monument types in the Irish landscape, preserves a quietly puzzling quality precisely because of that absence: the outline of an enclosed settlement, probably early medieval in origin, that seems to have closed itself off to the world.

The site was noted on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1837 as a circular earthwork, a reasonable description of what was presumably a more intact feature at that time. By the revised twenty-five-inch edition of 1913, the mapped outline had shrunk considerably and taken on a more oval shape, suggesting that the intervening decades had not been kind to it. A description from 1975 recorded an enclosure roughly 29 metres north to south and 28 metres east to west, defined by two earthen banks with a fosse, a ditch, between them; the inner bank was described as low, and the outer bank lower still. What gives the location an added layer of interest is its surroundings. The low-lying ground around it was apparently prone to flooding before drainage works were carried out in the 1970s, which raises the possibility that the slight rise on which the rath sits was a deliberate choice, positioning the settlement just clear of seasonal waterlogging. A possible barrow, a prehistoric burial mound, lies approximately ten metres to the south-east, hinting that this modest knoll held some significance across more than one period.
