Ringfort (Rath), Prospecthill, Co. Galway

On a south-facing slope in County Galway, partially absorbed into the surrounding pasture, sits a circular earthwork that most people walking the adjacent roadway would probably take for a natural undulation in the field.

It is around twenty-five metres across internally, and only portions of its defining bank of earth and stone still read clearly as something deliberately made. What survives is enough to identify it as a rath, the most common type of ringfort found across Ireland, a class of monument typically dating to the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, and generally understood to have served as enclosed farmsteads for individual families or small communities.

The enclosure sits in the north-west corner of a field overlooking Lackanaloy Creek to the west. Its bank is best preserved on the eastern side, where it reaches an external height of around sixty centimetres and a width of three metres, modest figures that suggest considerable levelling has taken place over the centuries. To the south, where the natural ground drops away with the slope of the valley, the bank gives way to a scarp roughly two metres high, the topography doing the work the earthwork once did. From the south-west around to the north-east, the bank has largely disappeared, though stones embedded in the ground hint at its original line. A gap of just under two metres on the south-south-west side may be an original entrance. A handful of hawthorn trees grow on the surviving bank, but otherwise the interior is clear of overgrowth, and the monument is legible enough to have shown up distinctly on aerial imagery from 2005. A field bank runs close to its western side, and there are signs of some recent ground disturbance near the southern field boundary, though the monument itself appears largely undisturbed beyond the gradual flattening that agricultural use over generations tends to produce.
