Ringfort (Rath), Rath, Co. Westmeath

On a steep narrow ridge in County Westmeath, the ground holds the faint outline of a ringfort that has been almost entirely erased by centuries of agricultural activity.

What survives is a partially levelled sub-circular enclosure, roughly 25 metres north to south and 21 metres east to west, its presence betrayed less by any visible bank than by a band of vegetation, a crop-mark approximately six metres wide that traces the arc of what was once a substantial earthwork. Ringforts, also known as raths, were enclosed farmsteads typically built during the early medieval period, often surrounded by an earthen bank and ditch to demarcate a family's land and livestock. This one sits with open views to the west, north, and east across gently rolling pasture, and a second ringfort lies just 180 metres to the south, suggesting a landscape that was once considerably more organised and populated than the quiet fields now imply.

The interior of the enclosure is slightly uneven, sloping from northeast to southwest, and is crossed by cultivation ridges running roughly north-northeast to south-southwest, evidence that the site was ploughed over at some point rather than simply abandoned. A levelled field boundary cuts across the southeast of the site, adding another layer to the palimpsest of land use. Immediately to the north, the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1837 records a limekiln, a structure used for burning limestone to produce quicklime for agricultural improvement and building mortar. By the time the revised edition of that map was published in 1911, the kiln had been levelled too, marked only by a hachured mound, the cartographic shorthand for a low earthen rise. Between these two maps, an entire working landscape had quietly subsided into the ground.
