Ringfort (Rath), Rathangan Demesne, Co. Kildare

A low, curving earthwork in a field is easy to overlook, but sometimes what survives at the margins is more interesting than what stands intact at the centre. On a south-facing pasture slope within Rathangan Demesne in County Kildare, the northern arc of an early medieval ringfort traces a barely-there line across ground that was once turned over for tillage. Only half the circuit endures, defined by a scarp no more than half a metre to one metre in height, running from west through north to east. The southern half, presumably levelled during agricultural use, is gone.

A ringfort, or rath, was the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically consisting of a circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used as a farmstead by a single family or small community. Thousands survive across the country in varying states of preservation, though many, like this one, have been significantly reduced by centuries of ploughing and land improvement. The estimated original diameter here of around fifty metres places it within the typical range for a single-enclosure rath. The Rathangan area, whose very name preserves the Irish word for ringfort, would once have been well populated with such features, and the presence of this example within the demesne grounds suggests it survived partly through the kind of incidental protection that parkland and estate land sometimes afforded to ancient earthworks.
