What you are looking at is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead built and occupied largely during the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. Thousands of them survive across Ireland, but most people pass without registering what the gentle swell of a field boundary or an unexplained circular patch of ground actually represents.

This particular example, near Rathdowney, measures approximately 55 metres in diameter, defined by a bank some 12 metres wide. The bank rises only about half a metre on its interior face, but reaches between one and 1.4 metres on the exterior, which is consistent with a modest defensive or enclosing earthwork of the kind a farming family might have raised to demarcate their homestead and protect livestock. Notably, there is no visible fosse, the surrounding ditch that typically accompanies such a bank and from which material was dug to build it up. Its absence here is a small puzzle. It may have silted in and been smoothed over by centuries of agriculture, or this particular construction may simply have relied on the bank alone. There is also no discernible original entrance. The overall external diameter, measured east to west, extends to around 76 metres, accounting for the full spread of the earthwork.
