What makes it slightly odd at first glance is precisely this layering of use: the ancient structure has been pressed into service by later farming activity to such a degree that disentangling the original from the incidental requires a careful eye.

This is a rath, the most common type of early medieval enclosure in Ireland, typically consisting of an earthen bank and internal ditch enclosing a raised interior platform where a farmstead once stood. The Rinecaha example is subcircular in plan, with internal diameters of roughly 27 metres east to west and just over 23 metres north to south. Its enclosing bank survives best along the western and northern arc, where it reaches between four and six metres in width, though elsewhere it has been worn down to little more than a low scarp. The rath was already considered significant enough to be mapped by the Ordnance Survey on their first edition six-inch map of 1842, and it appears again on the later Cassini edition of 1916, suggesting its outline remained legible through the nineteenth and into the twentieth century. The bank is now covered with fist-sized fieldstones and occasional larger boulders, the accumulated debris of repeated field clearance by farmers working the surrounding land over generations. Two later field walls have been built across the site, one cutting through the southern interior and another overlying the enclosing bank to the north-east, and a livestock gap has been worn through the bank at the north-north-west, a practical opening that speaks to the rath's long afterlife as ordinary farmland rather than monument.
