Known in Irish as a ráth, a ringfort is typically a circular enclosure defined by an earthen bank and ditch, used during the early medieval period as a farmstead and the centre of a family's agricultural life. Ireland has somewhere in the region of forty to fifty thousand of them, which sounds like a lot until you stand beside one and consider that this particular bank of earth was raised by specific people, in a specific season, around a home that has long since vanished.

Rinneen lies in Clare, a county whose landscape still carries a remarkable density of early medieval remains, from the limestone karst of the Burren to the low drumlin country further east. The rath here is one of countless such sites recorded across the island, most of them unexcavated and known largely through their surface form. Without excavation, the details that would bring a site like this into focus, who built it, how many people lived within it, what they farmed and traded, remain out of reach. What can be said is that the form itself speaks to a particular moment in Irish history, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries, when the enclosed farmstead was the basic unit of rural life, and when the earthwork bank served as much as a social boundary as a defensive one.
