Ringfort (Rath), Rooghaun, Co. Mayo

On a ridge top in Rooghaun, County Mayo, a low oval earthwork sits quietly in pasture, easy to walk past without recognising what it is.

The slight rise of a grassy bank and a shallow surrounding ditch are all that remain of a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common type of early medieval settlement in the Irish countryside. Thousands were built across Ireland, most of them between roughly the fifth and twelfth centuries, and they served as enclosed farmsteads for families of some local standing, the bank and fosse offering a modest degree of security for livestock and household alike.

This particular example is oval rather than the more typical circular form, measuring approximately 38.5 metres north to south and 43 metres east to west. An earthen bank, now standing to around 0.7 metres in height, defines the perimeter, with an external fosse, a cut ditch, running alongside it at a depth of roughly half a metre. Both dimensions suggest the enclosure has diminished considerably over the centuries through weathering, ploughing pressure, and general agricultural use. The bank has been disturbed in several places, which is common for raths in farmed landscapes, where field improvement, drainage work, and livestock movement have gradually worn away features that once stood far more prominently. The site was recorded as part of an archaeological survey of the Ballinrobe district, an area that also takes in Lough Mask and Lough Carra, compiled by D. Lavelle and published in 1994.
