Ringfort (Rath), Rostyduff, Co. Wicklow

What makes the rath at Rostyduff quietly compelling is not what survives above ground but what the ground itself is concealing.

The visible earthwork is a roughly circular enclosure about 31 metres across, its perimeter defined by an earth and stone bank that varies between just under two metres and nearly four metres wide. The outer face retains a partial revetment of small boulders, surviving to three courses on the northern side, which gives some sense of how the structure was once faced and maintained. A rath, in simple terms, is an early medieval farmstead enclosure, typically dating to somewhere between the sixth and tenth centuries, built to demarcate a household's space and offer a degree of protection for people and livestock. The entrance gap, 1.5 metres wide, sits at the south-east, which is a fairly common orientation for ringfort entrances across Ireland. A second gap to the south-west is almost certainly a later, probably modern, breach rather than an original feature.

The more intriguing detail comes from the 1838 Ordnance Survey six-inch map, which records an outer enclosure roughly 55 metres in diameter surrounding the inner rath. That outer ring is no longer visible at ground level, absorbed entirely into the surrounding terrain over the intervening centuries. Its presence on the historic map suggests this was once a bivallate or at least a more complex enclosure than the single bank now implies, and that considerably more of the original layout has been lost than the surviving earthwork suggests. There is no evidence of an external fosse, the ditched element that often accompanies such banks, nor are any internal features recorded, so the interior of the enclosure offers little to read directly. The site sits on level ground with a very gentle northward slope, a modest but deliberate positioning that would have provided reasonable outlook without commanding any dramatic elevation.
