Ringfort (Rath), Rusheen, Co. Kerry

On a low rise in north County Kerry, an earthen enclosure sits with a commanding view in every direction, its bank worn down on one side to little more than a gentle swell in the ground, yet still standing over two metres tall on the other.

This is a univallate rath, meaning a ringfort enclosed by a single earthen bank, the most common form of early medieval farmstead in Ireland. Thousands were built across the country, typically between the sixth and tenth centuries, as defended homesteads for farming families of middling status. What makes this one quietly arresting is its position: directly to the south lies Ballylongford Creek, feeding into Ballylongford Bay, also known as Moovoagh Bay, and the unobstructed sightlines across the estuary and surrounding land suggest the site was chosen with deliberate care.

The enclosure measures roughly 36 metres north to south and 30 metres east to west, an oval rather than a perfect circle. The earthen bank is best preserved along its western, northern, and eastern arc, where the exterior face rises to a maximum of 2.2 metres and the bank itself spreads to 8 metres at its base. Along the same arc, a fosse, the shallow ditch typically dug on the outside of a rath to provide material for the bank and add a further obstacle, survives to a width of about 3 metres, though it sits only around 0.4 metres below the level of the surrounding ground. To the south, the bank has diminished to little more than a rise in the field. An additional fieldbank runs roughly 4 metres outside the main enclosing bank along the northern to eastern stretch, hinting at a secondary boundary or enclosure, though its precise function is not recorded. The site was documented as part of the North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995 by C. Toal.
