Set on a level stretch of County Wexford farmland, an oval area of grass and scrub roughly fifty metres north to south and forty metres east to west marks the footprint of an early medieval ringfort. There is no dramatic ditch, no obvious gateway, no towering earthwork to announce itself. Instead, the enclosure is defined by a slight scarp along its north-western to north and east to south-eastern edges, and a low bank that has been absorbed into a curved field boundary along the southern side. The landscape has quietly swallowed it.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths when built primarily of earth, were the dominant settlement type of early medieval Ireland, broadly spanning the period from around the fifth to the twelfth century. They functioned as enclosed farmsteads, the raised banks and ditches, or fosses, serving as much to pen livestock and mark status as to provide serious defence. Thousands survive across Ireland in varying states of preservation, but many, like this one at Russellstown, have been reduced over centuries of agriculture to little more than a faint swell in the ground. The incorporation of the southern bank into an existing field boundary is a common story: farmers found it practical to reuse the ready-made curve of an ancient earthwork rather than level it entirely, and so the ringfort persisted, half-remembered, in the field pattern. The absence of any visible fosse here suggests either that the original construction relied more on the bank than on an accompanying ditch, or that any ditch has been filled and levelled over time.
