At the bottom of a west-to-east valley in County Waterford, a grass-covered circle thirty metres across marks where someone, many centuries ago, chose to settle and defend themselves. The earthen bank enclosing this rath, a type of ringfort built from raised earth rather than stone, is notably spread, running nine to eleven metres wide, though it barely rises above the surrounding ground today, standing no more than half a metre on the interior. What keeps the site from being merely a subtle ripple in the landscape is the souterrain built into the bank on its western side. A souterrain is an underground passage or chamber, typically constructed during the early medieval period, most often used for storage or as a place of refuge in times of danger. Their presence in a ringfort bank is not uncommon, but finding one still recorded here gives the site a quiet depth that a grassy mound alone would not.

The outer fosse, a defensive ditch encircling the bank, survives reasonably well from the south-southwest around to the north, running about seven metres wide and still reaching a depth of roughly forty centimetres. On the northeastern to southern arc, only faint traces remain. The rath sits on a gently northeast-facing slope, a position that would have offered its inhabitants a degree of natural drainage and visibility across the valley floor. Adding further interest is the proximity of a separate enclosure site immediately adjacent, suggesting this was not an isolated farmstead but part of a small cluster of activity, the kind of layered early medieval landscape that is easy to walk past without realising what lies underfoot.
