Ringfort (Rath), Scartnadrinymountain, Co. Waterford

On a westward-facing slope at the foot of the Monavullagh Mountains in County Waterford, a roughly circular patch of grass sits enclosed within a low earthen and stone bank, untouched by the surrounding conifer plantation that has swallowed the rest of the landscape. The contrast is quietly striking: the monument remains unplanted, an open clearing held apart from the commercial forest pressing in on all sides.

This is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, the most common type of early medieval settlement monument found across Ireland. Ringforts were typically enclosed farmsteads, home to a single family and their livestock, defended by one or more earthen banks and external ditches. This particular example is subcircular in shape, measuring roughly 30 metres east to west and 25 metres north to south. Its enclosing bank, built of earth and stone with stone-facing along part of its inner face, rises more steeply on the upslope eastern side, where it reaches an external height of around 2.2 metres, and sits lower on the downslope western side, a difference that reflects the natural contour of the hillside. An outer fosse, a ditch running around the outside of the bank, survives to the northeast and east but has been reduced elsewhere to a simple flat berm. A gap of about 2.1 metres in the western bank may represent the original entrance. Part of the bank to the west and north-northwest has been removed altogether, and a stone-faced field bank now cuts across the northern side of the site, separating it from a second, related rath lying only about 30 metres to the south. The proximity of two such enclosures suggests this corner of the Monavullagh foothills once supported more activity than its current quietness implies.
