Ringfort (Rath), Shanid Lower, Co. Limerick

There is something particularly melancholy about a site recorded primarily as an absence.

In Shanid Lower, County Limerick, a ringfort that once stood clearly enough to be mapped in detail has since vanished so thoroughly that when a surveyor came to inspect it, there was simply nothing to see. The monument exists now mainly as a record of its own disappearance.

A ringfort, or rath, is one of the most common archaeological monument types in Ireland, typically a circular area enclosed by one or more earthen banks and ditches, used as a farmstead during the early medieval period. This particular example was documented on the 1841 Ordnance Survey six-inch map as a circular embanked enclosure measuring approximately 25 metres in diameter, a modest but perfectly legible feature in the landscape. When Denis Power compiled his survey notes, uploaded in August 2011, the picture was considerably less legible. The site sits on a break in a south-east-facing slope, immediately north of a sheer scarp that drops into a ravine. Along that edge, heaps of earth and stone had been dumped, the likely remnants of the levelling that destroyed the monument. The surrounding area is described as waste ground, which lends the whole scene a quality of deliberate or at least careless erasure.

For anyone curious enough to visit, the location in Shanid Lower places it in an area of County Limerick already associated with medieval history, not far from the ruins of Shanid Castle. The site itself offers nothing visually distinct to orient yourself by, which is rather the point. The ravine to the south provides the clearest geographic anchor, and the break in slope described in the survey notes may still be readable underfoot even if nothing survives above ground. There are no facilities, no signage, and no obvious reason to linger, beyond the particular satisfaction of standing somewhere that a map once marked and a landscape has since quietly swallowed.
