There is no visible entrance gap in the bank, and no fosse, the defensive ditch that typically surrounds a ringfort of this kind, has survived or perhaps ever existed here. What remains is a subtle earthwork, easy to walk past, yet precise enough in its dimensions and form to be unmistakably deliberate.

The site occupies a gently undulating karst landscape, the fractured limestone terrain that defines much of the Burren and its surrounds in Clare, where thin soils sit over bare rock and drainage disappears underground. The ringfort itself is oval rather than the more common circular form, measuring roughly 21.6 metres east to west and 15.4 metres north to south. Its defining feature is a stone-strewn earthen bank, between 4.7 metres wide at the north and up to 7 metres wide at the east, with internal and external heights ranging from roughly 0.4 to 0.9 metres. A ringfort, or rath, was typically a farmstead enclosure of the early medieval period, used to define a family's living and agricultural space and to keep livestock secure. This one is now crowned with a dense growth of hazel, which in Ireland often signals long-undisturbed ground, the shrub having colonised the bank over many decades or centuries without human interference.
