This is a rath, the most common type of early medieval enclosure in Ireland, typically built as a defended farmstead by a family of some local standing. The form is simple: a roughly circular area enclosed by an earthen bank, with a ditch, or fosse, dug around the outside. At Sheefin, the enclosure measures approximately 43 metres across its northeast to southwest axis, a modest but respectable size, and the interior rises noticeably towards its centre, giving the whole thing a subtle domed quality that sets it apart from the surrounding fields.

The bank survives best along the northern and eastern arc, where it still reads as a proper raised feature. Elsewhere it has worn down to little more than a scarp, a low slope in the ground where the original material has slumped or been disturbed over the centuries. The external fosse remains visible along the north, northeast, southeast, and southwestern sections, though it too is shallow. What makes this site particularly interesting is the interior: faint traces of cultivation ridges run roughly north-northeast to south-southwest across the enclosed ground, suggesting that at some point after the ringfort fell out of use as a settlement, the land within it was turned over to tillage. This layering of different uses is common across Irish ringforts, which were often repurposed, built over, or simply farmed once their original occupants were long gone. A second ringfort lies approximately 50 metres to the west, and the presence of two such enclosures in close proximity hints at the density of early medieval settlement that once characterised this part of the Irish midlands.

Field fences now cut across the monument at its southern and western edges, and a farm track runs along the eastern side, so the site has been absorbed into the working rhythms of the modern landscape. The good westward views from the rise would have made it a sensible location for an early medieval household, keeping watch over the surrounding countryside in a way that still makes intuitive sense when you stand there today.
