Ringfort (Rath), Sheheree, Co. Kerry

In the pastureland of Sheheree, a circular outline roughly thirty metres across sits quietly beneath the grass, visible only from the air.

When an aerial photograph was taken in 1989, the crop or soil markings revealed what appears to be a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, one of the most common monument types in the Irish landscape. Raths were typically enclosed farmsteads of the early medieval period, defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, and tens of thousands of them are estimated to have once existed across the country. This particular one, however, has effectively disappeared at ground level.

The site lies on a gentle north-east-facing slope with open views southward towards Mangerton Mountain in the Killarney uplands. That alone places it in good company; many raths were deliberately sited on elevated or gently sloping ground, offering both drainage and visibility across the surrounding territory. What makes this example quietly compelling is its ambiguity. It has not been excavated, its earthworks have not survived as upstanding features, and its classification as a rath remains tentative, dependent entirely on that single aerial photograph taken over three decades ago. The enclosure is there in the image, circular and deliberate-looking, but walk the field today and there is nothing obvious to find.
