Ringfort (Rath), Sranagalloon, Co. Clare

In the townland of Sranagalloon in County Clare, a ringfort sits in the landscape, largely unrecorded in any publicly accessible form.

Ringforts, known in Irish as raths, are among the most common archaeological monuments in Ireland, with estimates suggesting around 40,000 once existed across the island. They are typically circular enclosures defined by one or more earthen banks and ditches, and most date to the early medieval period, roughly between the fifth and twelfth centuries. They served as farmsteads, the enclosed space sheltering a family, their animals, and their stores against the ordinary hazards of rural life rather than against any serious military threat. The one at Sranagalloon is, for now, a name on a map and little else.

The townland name itself, Sranagalloon, carries the compressed history that Irish place names so often do, though without further documentation the specifics of this particular site remain genuinely obscure. Clare is a county dense with early medieval remains, its limestone landscape having preserved earthworks that elsewhere were lost to intensive tillage or development. A rath in this part of Munster would likely have belonged to a farming family of modest means, the enclosing bank a marker of territory and household identity as much as a practical boundary. Without excavation records or historical documentation attached to this specific site, anything more precise would be speculation.
