Ringfort (Rath), Streamstown, Co. Galway

In a field of level pastureland near Streamstown in County Galway, a circular earthwork sits quietly in the grass, its outline almost domestic in scale yet carrying the unmistakable geometry of early medieval intention.

The structure is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, a type of enclosed settlement built predominantly between the sixth and tenth centuries and once so common across Ireland that tens of thousands of examples survive in various states of preservation. This one measures roughly 25.3 metres in diameter, making it a modest but complete specimen of the form.

What defines it, as with all raths, is the combination of a raised bank and an external fosse, the fosse being the ditch from which the bank material was originally dug. Here the bank survives to an internal height of around half a metre and an external height of approximately one metre, with a base width of five metres tapering to less than a metre at the top. These measurements suggest reasonable preservation, and the structure is recorded as being in fair condition overall. Along the northern to eastern arc, the bank has been colonised by trees, which give that portion of the enclosure a slightly more pronounced, shaggy silhouette against the surrounding farmland. The interior would originally have contained a household or small farmstead, the bank and ditch serving as both a boundary marker and a modest defensive arrangement against livestock theft or opportunistic raiding rather than any serious military threat.
