Ringfort (Rath), Taghmon, Co. Westmeath

A low earthen bank drawn into an almost-circular ring on the side of a steep hill in County Westmeath is easy to overlook, especially from a distance.

But this ringfort at Taghmon rewards closer attention, partly because of what it is and partly because of the small puzzles it presents. Ringforts, known in Irish as raths when formed primarily from earthworks, were the most common form of rural settlement in early medieval Ireland, typically enclosing a farmstead and its outbuildings within a raised bank and a surrounding ditch, called a fosse. Thousands survive across the country, though many have been reduced by centuries of agriculture. This one has kept its essential shape.

The rath sits on a south-east facing slope and measures roughly 27 metres across on its north-west to south-east axis. An earthen bank defines the perimeter, with a fosse running outside it. On the eastern to south-eastern side, a gap roughly 2.7 metres wide marks what was the original entrance, approached by a causeway of similar width crossing the ditch. On the western and north-western side, a quarry hole is visible within the fosse area, a feature that complicates the otherwise legible outline and suggests the site was disturbed or exploited at some point after its primary use. The interior is not level; it slopes noticeably from north-west down to south-east, which would have been a practical consideration for anyone who once lived inside it. The elevated position on the hillside gives clear views to the north-east, a characteristic shared by many such enclosures, where visibility across the surrounding landscape served both practical and social purposes.
