In a field of level pasture in Tomdeely North, County Limerick, there once stood a rath, the kind of embanked circular enclosure that served as a farmstead and defensive boundary for an early medieval Irish family. Today, there is nothing left to see at all.

A rath, sometimes called a ringfort, typically consists of one or more earthen banks and ditches arranged in a rough circle, enclosing a domestic space within. Thousands survive across Ireland in various states of preservation, and they remain among the most common archaeological monument types in the country. The example at Tomdeely North was modest in scale, recorded on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1841 as an embanked circular enclosure approximately twenty-five metres in diameter. That survey provides the clearest evidence that it once existed at all. By the time Denis Power inspected the site and compiled the record, uploaded in August 2011, it had been levelled entirely, leaving no visible trace on the ground.

The field itself gives no indication of what the OS cartographers once carefully noted. Visitors who make their way out here expecting even a low grassy bank or a faint circular depression in the turf will find only ordinary pasture. The site is of interest less for what it offers to the eye than for what it represents as a category of loss: a monument that survived long enough to be mapped in the nineteenth century, and not long enough to reach the present. That 1841 map record is now the sole documentation of its existence, a reminder that the archaeological landscape is not static, and that absence can itself be a kind of record.
