Ringfort (Rath), Tooreen, Co. Mayo

A road running through the middle of an ancient enclosure is an arresting idea, yet that is precisely what has happened at this site near Tooreen in County Mayo.

A rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, is a roughly circular earthen enclosure, typically dating from the early medieval period, that once served as a farmstead or place of shelter. Here, a rural road on a north-south axis has driven straight through the centre of one, splitting what was once a roughly oval structure into two surviving arcs, one on each side of the tarmac. The road has claimed an estimated seven metres of the enclosure's width, and yet, oddly, the land has preserved a kind of memory of what was lost: a gentle rise and undulation in the road surface still traces the original contours of the buried bank beneath.

The site sits on elevated ground along the western side of a north-south ridge, with the land falling away westward toward the flood plain of the Cloonalaghan River. That commanding position would have been a practical choice for whoever first raised the enclosure, offering both visibility and drainage. What survives is modest but legible. In the field to the west of the road, an arc of raised ground stretches roughly 25 metres on its north-south axis, defined by a stony earthen bank that still stands about 1.2 metres high on its outer face, though only 0.3 metres on the interior. The corresponding arc to the east has fared less well; its bank has been reduced to around 0.3 metres and is further interrupted at its northern end by a property fence. Intriguingly, the site does not appear on the Ordnance Survey six-inch map of 1838, suggesting it was already sufficiently degraded or obscured by that date to escape the surveyors' attention, though by the 1922 edition it is marked clearly enough. A second rath sits approximately 30 metres to the northwest, making this a small cluster of related enclosures on the same ridge.
