Ringfort (Rath), Tubrid More, Co. Kerry

On a gently rising field in Tubrid More, in north County Kerry, the land itself seems to be doing something deliberate.

Two concentric rings of earthwork trace a near-perfect circle roughly 34 metres across, the geometry too precise to be natural, too worn to be recent. This is a bivallate rath, a type of ringfort defined by its double defensive circuit: two banks separated by a fosse, or ditch, creating a layered enclosure that would once have protected a farmstead and its inhabitants during early medieval Ireland. The double circuit, rarer than the single-banked variety, suggests the occupants either had more to defend or wanted others to think so.

The site is not in pristine condition, and that erosion tells its own story. The outer bank has been significantly levelled over the centuries and now only reads clearly from the northern arc around to the south-east, rising to barely 0.6 metres at its highest. The intervening fosse, around 5 metres wide, is only legible where both banks still stand to give it context. The inner bank has fared somewhat better, reaching 1.1 metres on its interior face and a more substantial 2 metres on the exterior, where it would originally have presented the more imposing aspect to anyone approaching. A gap of around 9 metres in the outer bank to the north-east is the likely location of the original entrance, with the bank curving inward on either side in a manner that would have funnelled and controlled access. Immediately to the south-west, a now-disused quarry sits close by, and it is possible that stone extraction over the years contributed to the degradation of the outer works. The site was documented in C. Toal's North Kerry Archaeological Survey, published in 1995.
