Ringfort (Rath), Tuitestown, Co. Westmeath

In a grass field in Tuitestown, County Westmeath, an oval earthwork sits quietly on a low rise, its double banks enclosing a space no larger than a modest suburban garden.

What makes it worth a second look is the detail of its construction: two concentric banks of earth and stone, a shallow ditch between them, and a narrow causewayed entrance gap at the south-west, just wide enough for a single person to pass through. The interior rises gently toward its own centre, a subtle topographic gesture that becomes clearer the longer you stand within it.

This is a rath, the commonest type of ringfort in Ireland, typically dating from the early medieval period between roughly the fifth and twelfth centuries. Raths were enclosed farmsteads, the earthen equivalent of a walled yard, used to protect a household and its livestock rather than to serve any large-scale military purpose. This particular example measures approximately 22 metres north to south and 17 metres east to west, a modest but coherent oval. The inner bank survives well, holding its shape with reasonable clarity, while the outer bank has eroded to the point where it is only legible from the south-west to the west. A fosse, the ditch cut between the two banks to add an additional obstacle, survives in slight form. Seventy metres to the west, a stream traces the boundary between Tuitestown and the neighbouring townland of Gartlandstown, and a second ringfort lies roughly 210 metres further west, suggesting this corner of Westmeath once supported a small cluster of enclosed farmsteads within easy distance of one another.
