Ringfort (Rath), Tullahennel, Co. Kerry

A low earthen bank rising barely a metre above the ground it encloses might not announce itself as much, but the rath at Tullahennel carries a particular quality that sets it apart from more obviously dramatic sites: it sits in boggy ground, and from inside the enclosure the land opens up in every direction without obstruction.

Whoever chose this spot was thinking carefully about visibility.

Raths, the most common type of early medieval settlement monument in Ireland, are roughly circular enclosures defined by one or more earthen banks, and were typically used as enclosed farmsteads from around the sixth to the twelfth centuries. This example is univallate, meaning it has a single enclosing bank rather than the two or three banks seen at higher-status sites. The interior is sub-circular, measuring approximately 35 metres north to south and 34 metres east to west. The bank itself stands 1.4 metres above the external ground level and about a metre above the interior, which is a modest but legible profile. A five-metre gap on the eastern side most likely marks the original entrance, a typical placement for Irish raths. To the southwest, the bank has been disturbed across a stretch of about eleven metres, and a trough has been placed just inside the interior, suggesting later agricultural interference. More intriguing is what appears to be a ditch along the interior face of the bank on the southern to eastern arc, running for around thirteen metres before it transitions into a small mound measuring roughly four metres by three and a half metres. The function of this internal feature is not entirely clear, though internal ditches and mounds occasionally relate to subdivisions within a rath's enclosure or to later modifications.

The boggy setting would have made the site somewhat defensible in a passive sense, difficult to approach quickly or quietly, while the commanding sightlines meant that anyone inside would have had ample warning of movement across the surrounding landscape.
