Ringforts

Ringfort, Steelaun, Co. Mayo

On elevated ground above Rathfran Bay in County Mayo, a faint circular scar in the pasture marks what was once an enclosed settlement.

It is easy to miss: the defining feature is a low, eroded scarp, nowhere taller than half a metre, tracing a rough circle roughly 21 metres north to south and 20 metres east to west. Ringforts, the most common monument type in the Irish landscape, were typically enclosed farmsteads of the early medieval period, their residents protected by an earthen bank or stone wall. Here, the enclosure has been so thoroughly absorbed into the working landscape that stretches of it have vanished into later field walls, themselves now levelled.

What survives is legible, if only just. The scarp can be followed clearly from the southern to the north-eastern arc, but elsewhere it fades in and out of visibility. On the south-western section, a slight stony rim on the inside edge, picked out by shorter grass growth, may be the ghost of an original enclosing wall or bank, its stones robbed out or tumbled over generations of agricultural use. The interior is uneven, scattered with hollows and a few heaps of cleared stone, the kind of surface that accumulates when land is worked and reworked across centuries. A remnant field wall cuts straight through the middle of the enclosure on an east-west line, a later division that speaks to how thoroughly the site was folded into ordinary farmland. The ground within slopes gently downward toward the east, where, 200 metres away, a stony shoreline meets the bay.
