Ringfort, Tristaun, Co. Galway

On a low ridge in the rolling grassland of north Galway, there is a feature in the landscape that most walkers would pass without a second glance.

What survives here is a rath, the Irish term for a ringfort, a type of enclosed farmstead typically dating from the early medieval period, roughly 500 to 1000 AD. Thousands of them once dotted the Irish countryside, built by farming families who enclosed their homes and livestock within earthen banks or stone walls. This one, near the Ballinure River, has worn down to little more than a scarp, a low slope in the ground that traces the outline of where the enclosing bank once stood.

The shape it describes is roughly subcircular, measuring approximately 30 metres north to south and 26.5 metres east to west. Those dimensions are fairly typical for a single-family rath of modest means. More intriguing is a gap about six metres wide on the south-south-east side, which may represent the original entrance. Ringforts were usually oriented with their entrance facing away from the prevailing weather and often towards the most accessible approach across the surrounding land, so a south-facing gap fits a recognisable pattern. Whether this one was deliberately positioned or is simply the result of later disturbance is something the surviving remains cannot settle with certainty.
