Ringfort, Weston, Co. Galway

Most ringforts announce themselves with some confidence, a raised circular platform, a bank you can clamber over, a ditch you have to step across.

The rath at Weston in County Galway offers considerably less. Spread across a north-east-facing slope in open grassland, it survives now only as a faint suggestion of its original form, a subcircular enclosure measuring roughly 38 metres east to west and 33 metres north to south, its outline traceable in places by a low scarp rather than anything as definitive as a wall or earthen bank. Only along the southern edge does a proper bank remain, and even there the word "proper" should be taken generously. At the north-east, faint traces of an external fosse, a defensive ditch that would originally have ringed the enclosure, can still be made out.

Raths of this kind were the farmsteads of early medieval Ireland, typically dating from somewhere between the sixth and twelfth centuries, enclosed settlements where a family and their animals would have lived within a banked and ditched boundary. They are among the most common archaeological monuments in the Irish landscape, with tens of thousands recorded across the island. Most have been reduced over centuries by agriculture, quarrying, or simply the slow work of erosion, and the Weston example sits firmly at the more eroded end of that spectrum. What remains is a monument that requires patience and a degree of imagination to read, its original purpose and scale legible only if you know what you are looking at and are willing to look carefully.
