Road – class 1 togher, Corlea, Co. Longford

Buried in the bogland of County Longford, a 159-metre timber road survives in a state of near-dissolution, its wood so thoroughly softened by centuries of peat that excavators could barely find a clean cut edge anywhere along its length.

This is one of several toghers at Corlea, the ancient Irish term for a bog road, typically constructed by laying timber across waterlogged or unstable ground to allow people and animals to pass. What makes this particular example quietly arresting is not its scale but its condition, and what that condition reveals about the people who built it.

Excavation of the road exposed a walking surface somewhere between 0.4 and 0.7 metres wide, formed from closely spaced roundwood and brushwood laid lengthways, with further timber outliers running parallel to the central core. Beneath this upper layer, builders had placed additional roundwood and brushwood running transversely, diagonally, and longitudinally, creating a composite superstructure designed to distribute weight across the soft bog surface. The largest single transverse timber was a curving oak roundwood measuring 3.5 metres. Most of the wood recovered was in a severely degraded state, with only a small number of timbers retaining even fragmentary evidence of worked ends, and those in poor condition. Perhaps the most striking detail is that the largest upper longitudinal, a half-split roundwood trunk hollowed by decay, may actually have been placed in that already-rotted state when the road was originally laid. Whether that reflects pragmatic reuse of available material or urgency in construction, it is impossible now to say, but it introduces a human ambiguity that bare structural descriptions rarely offer.
