Road – class 2 togher, Corlea, Co. Longford

In the boglands of Corlea in County Longford, a prehistoric road lies preserved beneath the peat, invisible to anyone walking overhead but measurably, verifiably present.

What survives is at least a hundred metres of it, running in a north-east to south-west direction, two metres wide and roughly fourteen centimetres deep, built from roundwood and brushwood laid across the soft, unstable ground.

This is a togher, the Irish term for a trackway or road constructed through boggy terrain, typically by laying timber, branches, or other organic material to create a firm surface above the waterlogged earth. Toghers vary considerably in their engineering, from simple bundles of brushwood to more elaborate plank roads, and they are classified accordingly. The Corlea example is recorded as a class 2 togher, meaning it was built using roundwood, the smaller, roughly cylindrical stems of trees or shrubs, combined with brushwood, the finer branching material that would have been packed beneath or around the timbers to distribute weight and prevent sinking. The construction is modest but deliberate, the work of people who needed to cross this landscape regularly and knew exactly how to do it. Bog conditions, low in oxygen and high in acidity, are exceptionally good at preserving organic material, which is why wooden roads that would have rotted away entirely in drier ground can survive here for thousands of years.
