Road – class 2 togher, Corlea, Co. Longford

In the bogland of Corlea in County Longford, a road has been found that was never built for wheels or horses.

It is a togher, an ancient trackway laid across waterlogged ground using timber rather than stone or gravel, and this particular example was identified as a loose band of brushwood and roundwood running in an east-north-east to south-west-west direction through the peat. What makes it quietly remarkable is the evidence of deliberate, considered engineering carried out by people working in wet, difficult terrain with materials cut from the surrounding woodland.

When excavators opened two cuttings along its length, the togher revealed a layered structure between roughly one and two and a half metres wide, and about thirty centimetres deep. The builders had laid longitudinal roundwood, the poles and stems of small trees, sometimes in pairs, then packed brushwood and twigs around and between them. To hold everything in place, a large number of wooden pegs and posts had been driven down through the structure, each one shaped to a point at the working end. The condition of those tips tells its own story: many were blunted and buckled where they had been hammered against lower timbers already in position, suggesting that the construction was compacted and dense rather than loosely thrown together. The full exposed length of the trackway reached 35.5 metres, though the feature extended into the drain faces on both the east and west sides, meaning the original road was almost certainly longer. The site was recorded by Dunne in 1999 and further detailed following excavation, and it belongs to a class of togher that represents a more modest but nonetheless engineered response to the challenge of crossing boggy ground, as opposed to the massive Iron Age plank roads for which Corlea is more widely known.
