Road – class 3 togher, Cloontamore, Co. Longford

Buried in the bogland of Cloontamore in County Longford lies a fragment of road that was never meant to be impressive, only useful.

It is a togher, the Irish term for a trackway laid across soft or waterlogged ground, and this particular example is modest even by the standards of its type: forty centimetres wide and just ten centimetres deep, built from lengths of roundwood oak and ash laid longitudinally across the marsh. At that width, it would barely accommodate a single person walking carefully, perhaps guiding an animal, perhaps simply crossing ground that would otherwise have swallowed a foot whole.

Toghers were a practical solution to a persistent problem in a landscape threaded with bog and fen. Builders would cut timber, strip it roughly, and lay it in overlapping runs to create a firm surface above the saturated peat. The choice of oak and ash here is notable; both are dense, slow to rot, and were clearly valued for exactly that reason by whoever felled and laid them. The trackway runs on a north-north-west to south-south-east orientation, suggesting it connected two specific points across the wet ground rather than wandering. Without dating information in the available record, it is impossible to say with certainty when it was built, though toghers of this construction type have been found across Ireland ranging from the Bronze Age well into the medieval period. The site was investigated as part of work carried out by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit, based at University College Dublin, which systematically recorded bog trackways across the Irish midlands before many were lost to drainage and peat extraction.
