Road – class 3 togher, Corlea, Co. Longford

Beneath the bogland of Corlea in County Longford, preserved in the waterlogged darkness for roughly two millennia, lies a section of ancient road that was never meant to be rediscovered.

It is a togher, the Irish term for a wooden trackway laid across soft or marshy ground, and this particular example stretches 2.6 metres wide and survives to a depth of 0.26 metres, its timbers still holding something of their original arrangement after all this time.

The construction is methodical rather than improvised. Roundwood, the term for timber used roughly as it grows rather than split or shaped into planks, was laid in regular courses across the bog, with clusters of brushwood packed in at intervals to stabilise or fill the surface. The wood species identified at the site, birch, ash, and some alder, are all native Irish trees well suited to wet conditions, and their selection was likely deliberate. Alder in particular is famously resistant to decay when kept wet, a property exploited by builders from ancient Ireland to medieval Venice. That the timbers survived at all is largely down to the bog itself, whose acidic, oxygen-poor environment acts as a natural preservative. Corlea is already known as one of Ireland's most significant wetland archaeological zones, home to a major Iron Age road excavated in the 1980s and now partially displayed in a dedicated interpretive centre nearby. This togher is one of several further trackways recorded across the same landscape, each representing a separate attempt, across different periods, to move people or animals safely across ground that would otherwise have been impassable.
