Road – class 3 togher, Derrindiff, Co. Longford

In the bogland of Derrindiff, County Longford, a road quietly waited for three thousand years.

Not a road in any sense a modern traveller would recognise, but a togher, a timber trackway of the kind that Bronze Age communities built across the waterlogged midlands of Ireland to make passage possible through otherwise impassable ground. This particular example is classified as a class 3 togher, meaning it was constructed from roundwood, the rough, unworked trunks and branches of felled trees laid directly onto the bog surface rather than shaped into planks or structured beams.

The remains came to light during drainage work, which revealed a convex band of five roundwood timbers extending at an acute angle into a drain face, exposed over a length of 3.6 metres and a width of 2.4 metres. The central roundwood measured between 0.03 and 0.15 metres in diameter, with roughly six smaller pieces of brushwood, each around 3 to 4 centimetres across, lying on top of it. The largest timber may have been split at some point, though its condition made this difficult to confirm. No toolmarks were visible on any of the wood, and nothing appeared in the opposite drain face, suggesting either that the structure did not extend that far or that the remaining material had not survived. The trackway ran north to south. Excavation produced a radiocarbon date placing its construction somewhere between 1207 and 1130 BC, firmly within the Irish Middle Bronze Age, a period when the midland bogs were actively being crossed and managed by farming communities moving livestock, goods, and people across a landscape that was already several thousand years in the making.
