Road – class 3 togher, Derryaroge, Co. Longford

Beneath a County Longford bog, more than a metre down in the dark, wet peat, there may be a road.

Not a road in any modern sense, but a togher, the Irish term for a track or causeway built from timber, brushwood, or other organic materials and laid across boggy ground to allow people and animals to pass. Toghers vary widely in their construction and age; some are elaborate feats of early engineering, others little more than hurriedly laid branches. The one at Derryaroge falls into a middle category, classified as a class 3 togher, suggesting a relatively simple but deliberate structure.
