Road – class 3 togher, Derryglogher, Co. Longford

Beneath the bogland of Derryglogher in County Longford, a road survives that no wheeled vehicle has ever used.

It is a togher, an ancient trackway built from timber laid across wet or marshy ground to allow people and animals to cross terrain that would otherwise swallow them whole. This particular example runs on a north-north-east to south-south-west axis, measures four metres wide and sits roughly forty-five centimetres deep into the peat. Those dimensions place it in a category of togher that was seriously engineered, wide enough for cattle to be driven along it in some comfort.

The construction material is worked hazel brushwood and roundwood, the timber cut, prepared, and deliberately laid rather than simply thrown down in desperation. Hazel was a common choice for togher builders across Irish bogland; it is flexible, grows in manageable lengths, and coppices readily, meaning a community could harvest it repeatedly without destroying the source. The fact that the wood was worked points to some degree of planning and collective effort, though no date for the Derryglogher togher is recorded in available sources. It closely resembles a second togher found nearby in the same townland, suggesting either a period of sustained activity in this part of the midlands or a community that returned to the same solution across generations. Research into both structures was carried out by the Irish Archaeological Wetland Unit at University College Dublin, a project that systematically documented bogland archaeology across Ireland before peat extraction destroyed much of what remained.
