Road – class 3 togher, Derrymany, Co. Longford

Buried in the bogland of Derrymany in County Longford, a modest stretch of ancient timber roadway offers a surprisingly precise window into early Irish engineering.

At just 34 centimetres wide and 12 centimetres deep, this is not a grand ceremonial causeway but something altogether more workmanlike: a togher, the Irish term for a trackway laid across soft or waterlogged ground to allow passage where the earth alone would not bear weight. This particular example runs on a northwest to southeast orientation and is built from three longitudinal hazel roundwoods laid lengthways, with an oak timber placed transversely across them, a construction method that is simple, practical, and, given the preserving qualities of bog, remarkably durable across the centuries.

What makes the Derrymany togher especially interesting is its position in the ground. It was found lying directly beneath a second togher, meaning that at some point one community or generation laid a new road directly on top of an older one, whether because the lower trackway had sunk, decayed, or simply been forgotten. The two structures together point to a stretch of wetland that people needed to cross repeatedly over time, returning to the same line through the bog even as the physical fabric of the road was renewed. Hazel and oak were both practical choices for this kind of work; hazel is pliant and grows in manageable poles, while oak offers greater load-bearing solidity for a transverse support.
