Road – class 3 togher, Derrynaskea, Co. Longford

In the bogland of Derrynaskea in County Longford, there lies a class 3 togher: a timber trackway laid across wet ground by people who needed to cross it.

Toughers, as they are sometimes anglicised, are among the quieter achievements of early Irish communities. Where a river or a raised bog made passage difficult or impossible, these wooden roads, sometimes made of split planks, brushwood bundles, or laid logs, offered a solution that could endure for centuries beneath the preserving anaerobic conditions of peat. The class 3 designation refers to a particular construction type within a broader typological framework developed by researchers of Irish bog roads, reflecting differences in timber arrangement and complexity.

The trackway at Derrynaskea was noted during a field survey in 1988, running on an east to west orientation. The detail comes from B. Raftery, a leading figure in the study of Irish wetland archaeology, whose work helped bring the significance of bog roads to wider scholarly attention. The Irish boglands have yielded trackways ranging in date from the Bronze Age through to the early medieval period, and while no specific date is recorded for this particular example, its identification as part of the broader corpus of Irish togher sites places it within a landscape that was evidently crossed and managed by people across many generations. The east to west orientation is itself worth noting; such alignments sometimes reflect practical routes between settlements, fields, or water sources, though the specific geography of Derrynaskea that shaped this particular path remains unrecorded.
