Road – class 3 togher, Derrynaskea, Co. Longford

Beneath a boggy stretch of ground at Derrynaskea in County Longford, there lies a road that nobody has travelled for a very long time, buried under layers of peat and, more unusually, under two other roads just like it.

The structure is a togher, a type of ancient trackway built from timber or other organic materials to allow people and animals to cross otherwise impassable wetland. What makes this particular example quietly compelling is its position in the landscape: it sits at the lowest level of a stack of three such routes, one laid upon another at different points in time, each representing a separate attempt to solve the same boggy problem in the same place.
