It runs for roughly 75 metres before the undergrowth swallows it, parallel to the modern R204 between Carrigallen and Ballinamore, separated from a small stream by a narrow berm of earth. It is 6.5 metres wide, which is wide enough to matter, wide enough to suggest ambition. By 1907, when the Ordnance Survey recorded it on their six-inch map, it already appeared as a linear feature rather than a living route, a ghost of infrastructure pressed into the hillside and then abandoned.

Local memory, as recorded in the 1940s, held that this was a famine road, one of those relief works organised during the Great Famine of the 1840s to provide wages to starving labourers in exchange for physical labour, typically road-building or land drainage. The cruel irony of famine roads was well documented even at the time: men weakened by hunger were set to work on projects of questionable utility, routes that often led nowhere because utility was beside the point. Whether that local account is precisely accurate is difficult to verify at this distance, but the road's physical form is consistent with the story. The construction is careful enough, with a scarp on the uphill side reaching about 2.5 metres in height and a low earthen bank on the lower side sitting above a further scarp, the whole arrangement creating a level surface cut into uneven ground. Someone put considerable effort into a road that was never finished. The section surviving here is only part of a longer intended route, with related sections recorded roughly 300 metres to the north and around 1.5 kilometres to the southeast, suggesting the project had real scale before it stopped.
