Road – road/trackway, Ballyconnoe, Co. Clare

Cut directly into the rock face of a five-metre escarpment on the Burren plateau, a narrow zig-zagging trackway winds its way down the limestone in a series of deliberate turns before trailing off into the karst landscape.

It is traceable for roughly 108 metres, averaging about two metres in width, and its route is anything but straight: heading northwest, it bends southwest, then northwest again, apparently following whatever line made the descent manageable rather than any geometry of convenience. The Burren, in County Clare, is a landscape of exposed Carboniferous limestone pavements and glacially shaped terraces, and roads here often had to negotiate these natural steps and escarpments rather than cut across them. This one did so with some care.

The trackway sits on the north-western face of a northeast-to-southwest escarpment at Ballyconnoe, embedded within what appears to be a multiperiod field system, meaning one that accumulated boundaries and enclosures across several distinct eras of use. Nearby, within roughly eight metres of where the trackway begins its descent, stand the remains of a possible post-medieval house, along with four further house structures of indeterminate date. None of these has been firmly dated, which makes the trackway's own age equally uncertain. What does suggest something about its purpose is its apparent orientation: the route seems to lead in the direction of the medieval parish church of Killeany, which stands approximately 360 metres to the northwest. A road connecting a cluster of houses, however loosely dated, to a parish church is not an unusual arrangement, but finding it cut into the rock and still legible in the terrain gives the connection a physical weight that documents rarely do.
