Road – road/trackway, Coolmine (Newcastle By.), Co. Dublin

There is something quietly unsettling about a road that has been noted in the historical record but cannot be precisely placed on the ground.

Somewhere in the townland of Coolmine, in the barony of Newcastle, County Dublin, an old road or trackway was once significant enough to be worth recording, yet its exact course has since slipped out of view, absorbed into later field boundaries, suburban development, or simply the accumulated forgetting of generations.

The sole reference comes from Ua Broin, writing in 1957, who mentions the old road in passing at page fifty of his account. Beyond that attribution, the details are sparse. No alignment is given, no terminus identified, no indication of whether this was a medieval routeway connecting local settlements, an older track of earlier origin, or a more recent agricultural lane that had already fallen into disuse by the time it was noted. Coolmine itself sits in an area of north County Dublin with a layered landscape, and old roads in such townlands often reflect patterns of movement that predate the modern road network by centuries, sometimes linking parish churches, river crossings, or the scattered settlements of a farming community that organised itself very differently from anything visible today.

For anyone curious enough to look, Coolmine is now largely absorbed into the western Dublin suburbs, which makes tracing any remnant of an old trackway considerably more difficult than it might once have been. A researcher or careful walker might look for suggestive alignments in older large-scale Ordnance Survey maps, particularly the nineteenth-century editions, which sometimes preserve field paths and lanes that later mapping quietly drops. The Irish Architectural Archive and the relevant Sites and Monuments Record entry for the site may offer a starting point, though given the note that the road is not precisely located, the honest expectation is that this is as much a puzzle as a destination.
