Road – road/trackway, Mullaghreelan, Co. Kildare

Somewhere beneath the fields of Mullaghreelan in County Kildare, two ancient trackways run roughly east to west, invisible to anyone walking the ground but legible from the air as pale lines pressed into the soil. They were captured in aerial photographs under the reference CUCAP BGN 36, which revealed cropmarks, the faint differential growth of crops above buried features, outlining two pairs of fosses, or ditches, that once defined the edges of each route. The two trackways run approximately parallel, separated by around 150 metres.

Cropmarks form when buried ditches or walls affect how deeply-rooted crops grow and ripen, making ancient earthworks readable only from altitude and often only in dry summers when the contrast is sharpest. Here, the southern of the two trackways can be traced for an estimated maximum length of around 280 metres, running westward from a wooded area towards a square-shaped field that may be the remains of a moated site. Moated sites, relatively common in medieval Ireland, were typically enclosed by a water-filled ditch and used as defended farmsteads or manorial centres, particularly from the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. Whether the trackway served this possible moated site, or predates it entirely, is not established, but the alignment suggests a deliberate connection between the two features.
