Buried in the bogland of Derrindiff in County Longford, a few dozen metres of ancient timber trackway represent a kind of infrastructure so ordinary in its time that it was simply laid down and forgotten.
This is a togher, the Irish term for a raised road or causeway built across wet ground, typically constructed from split or rounded timber and brushwood woven together to create a stable surface over terrain that would otherwise be impassable. What makes this particular example quietly remarkable is not its scale but its survival, the wood still present, still identifiable by species, still bearing the marks left by whoever shaped it.
