Rock art, Carrowreagh or Craignacally, Co. Donegal

About 20 metres northeast of another documented stone (catalogued as DON 10D), visitors to Carrowreagh or Craignacally in County Donegal will find a remarkable example of prehistoric rock art.

This large, loose slab slopes gently towards the east and bears six substantial cupmarks; shallow, circular depressions that were carefully pecked into the stone surface thousands of years ago. The site was documented by researcher Van Hoek in 1988, who noted the distinctive size and depth of these ancient markings.

Cupmarks like these are amongst Ireland's most enigmatic prehistoric features, appearing on stones and outcrops across the country but particularly concentrated in certain regions of Donegal. Whilst their exact purpose remains a mystery, these deliberate modifications to natural stone surfaces represent some of the earliest forms of human artistic expression in Ireland, possibly dating back to the Neolithic or Bronze Age periods. The marks may have held ritual significance, served as territorial markers, or fulfilled some other purpose lost to time.

The Carrowreagh stone sits within a wider landscape of prehistoric activity in this part of Donegal, where numerous examples of rock art have been identified and catalogued over the years. The fact that this particular slab is loose rather than bedrock suggests it may have been moved or repositioned at some point in its long history, though the cupmarks themselves remain clearly visible; a tangible link to the area's ancient inhabitants and their still mysterious stone carving traditions.
