Rock art, Carrowreagh or Craignacally, Co. Donegal

In the rugged landscape of County Donegal, a series of large rock outcrops bear witness to Ireland's prehistoric past through subtle yet significant carved markings.

Located near Carrowreagh Or Craignacally, these ancient artworks consist of at least ten cupmarks scattered across the smooth surface of massive sheets of exposed rock. The carvings, though weathered by millennia of exposure to the Atlantic elements, represent an important example of Ireland's Bronze Age rock art tradition.

The most intriguing feature amongst these carvings is a distinctive cup mark surrounded by two complete concentric rings, from which two short parallel grooves extend outward from the outer ring, creating what archaeologist Maarten Van Hoek described as a keyhole shape. This particular motif, positioned on a horizontal section of the rock face, has nearly vanished due to natural weathering, making it all the more precious as a record of prehistoric artistic expression. The outcrop itself features a slight scarp facing southwest, providing a natural canvas for these ancient artists.

First documented comprehensively by Van Hoek in 1988, these carvings form part of a broader complex of rock art sites in the area, each marked with reference codes for archaeological recording. While the markings may appear faint to the casual observer, they represent thousands of years of human presence in this corner of Donegal, where our ancestors chose these particular stones to leave their mark, creating sacred or significant spaces whose true meaning remains tantalisingly out of reach.
