Rock art, Coomasaharn, Co. Kerry

On a rough pasture slope above Coomasaharn Lake in south Kerry, a low sandstone outcrop carries marks that were made, for reasons nobody can now recover, several thousand years ago.

The rock sits at around 171 metres above sea level on a south-east-facing hillside, with higher ground rising to the south and west and the lake lying roughly 380 metres to the south-west. It is not a dramatic object in itself, barely 35 centimetres at its highest point, smooth in places and fractured in others, but its sub-rectangular upper surface holds a quietly puzzling collection of carvings.

The motifs belong to a type of prehistoric rock art found widely across Atlantic Europe, though their meaning remains genuinely unknown. Cupmarks are exactly what the name suggests, small circular depressions pecked into the rock surface, while cup-and-ring motifs add one or more concentric rings around a central cup. Here there are two cupmarks, two cup-and-ring motifs, and a series of linear grooves cut across the face. The grooves vary considerably: the longest runs about 70 centimetres along the north-west side of the rock, while others are shorter and grouped toward the centre. The carved surface measures roughly 1.35 metres by 1.10 metres, and the motifs are described as very faint and weathered, the rings in particular barely traceable, with widths of only one to one and a half centimetres and depths of just two or three millimetres. A second rock art site lies approximately 15 metres to the west, and a further decorated outcrop was recorded about 20 metres to the north-east, suggesting this hillside above the lake holds a concentration of such markings rather than a single isolated example.

The site sits in rough pasture and the carvings, being so shallow and weathered, are genuinely difficult to read in ordinary conditions. Raking light, either early or late in the day, tends to bring out shallow rock carvings of this kind far more clearly than flat midday sun, and the faintness of these particular motifs makes that especially worth bearing in mind for anyone making the effort to find them.
