Rock art, Derrynacoulagh, Co. Kerry

In a field of improved pasture above the Feabunaun stream valley in County Kerry, a small sandstone boulder sits at the edge of an outcrop scattered with field clearance stones.

It would be easy to pass it without a second glance. But on one face of the stone, oriented northward, a subrectangular surface less than half a metre wide carries a set of marks that were almost certainly made by human hands in prehistory: four cupmarks, each roughly five to six centimetres across and pressed about nine to ten millimetres into the rock, arranged off-centre toward the south of the stone. Three further pickmarks sit adjacent to the east. Cupmarks are among the most widespread and least understood forms of prehistoric rock art, shallow circular depressions pecked or ground into stone surfaces, found across Ireland, Britain, and much of Europe, yet stubbornly resistant to confident interpretation.

The boulder itself is modest in scale, measuring roughly 85 centimetres east to west and standing no more than 70 centimetres at its highest point, a fractured piece of sandstone that has weathered into a relatively smooth decorated face. It occupies a south-east-facing slope at around 111 metres above sea level, with views stretching south toward the Esk and Barraboy mountains and the valley of the Feabunaun stream below, while Knockeirka hill rises to the north. Whether that orientation or that prospect carried any significance for the people who made the marks is unknown, but the placement is deliberate enough to notice. The site was first identified as rock art by A. Lambe in 2015, meaning it entered the formal record only recently despite sitting in what is now ordinary agricultural land.
