Rock art, Fegart, Co. Donegal

In the northwest corner of a pasture field on Doagh Island, County Donegal, ancient rock art emerges from a cluster of bedrock boulders on a low grassy rise.

The site offers spectacular views across Trawbreaga Bay to the north and east, with the long stretch of the Malin peninsula visible beyond. To the west, the ground rises gradually through small hills and rocky peaks, whilst dramatic mountains form a distant backdrop to the southwest. Though partly obscured by field clearance stones and woody debris, the decorated surface remains accessible to those who know where to look.

The rock art appears on a bedrock slab measuring approximately 2.3 metres from northeast to southwest and one metre from northwest to southeast. The northwest edge rises about 25 centimetres above ground level before sloping gently down to the southeast where it disappears beneath the surface. The decorated area, found at the southwest end of the stone, spans roughly 1.4 metres by 65 centimetres and features two weathered cup-and-ring motifs. A natural fissure runs across the entire width of the surface, cutting through both designs.

Each motif consists of a central cup, about 7 to 8 centimetres in diameter, surrounded by a ring measuring approximately 23 centimetres across. The western motif shows a clearly defined ring on its northwest arc, whilst the southeastern portion has become less distinct over time. Faint depressions suggest the possible presence of a second, outer ring. The second motif, located about 20 centimetres to the southeast, displays its clearest definition along the northeast arc, with similar hints of an outer ring. This site at Fegart forms part of a larger complex of rock art in the area, with another possible example just 2.8 metres away and additional confirmed examples 70 metres to the northeast in the same field.
