Rock art, Liss, Co. Kerry

On a rough, south-west-facing slope near the Staigue river in County Kerry, a low slab of fractured rock carries a set of prehistoric carvings that went officially unrecognised until 2013.

The outcrop itself is not much to look at; it barely rises above the pasture around it, reaching a maximum height of around fifteen centimetres. But on a slightly elevated portion of its surface, a series of cup-and-ring motifs have been pecked into the stone, each consisting of a small circular depression, the cup, surrounded by one or more carved rings. These are among the most common forms of prehistoric rock art found across Atlantic Europe and the British Isles, though their precise meaning or function remains genuinely unknown. Four such motifs are present here, ranging from seventeen to twenty-two centimetres across, alongside a lone cupmark, a simple unringed depression, set apart to the west-north-west. The whole decorated section runs to about four and a half metres in length and less than a metre in width, oriented broadly east to west.

The carvings are difficult to read. Weathering has softened their edges, and a cover of black moss has settled into the very depressions that define the motifs, making them hard to distinguish from the surrounding fractures and texture of the rock. The site looks south towards the sea and the Kenmare river estuary, a broad tidal inlet that divides the Iveragh and Beara peninsulas, which gives the location a certain quiet prominence even if nothing about the rock itself announces its significance. It was first identified as rock art by A. Lambe in 2013, which is a reminder of how recently some prehistoric monuments enter the formal record, even in areas of Kerry long associated with archaeological interest.
